The spring Cedar River trip was a typical one, filled with bad weather and even worse fishing.
The fishing
is never very good in the spring. In fact usually the river is so high at this time of year that we don't even try
it. This year the low river level lulled me into forgetting that the fish in the Cedar just don't bite. After arriving
Friday night at about 6:30, Brian and I spent a couple hours walking the river. Another thing about Spring fishing, the
water is cold. Brian cheats and wears waders. We (Brian) did catch one nice smallmouth and I think a snagged
a carp in the dorsal fin, but couldn't bring it in.
Saturday was filled with thunderstorms and relentless rain. We spent
the day mountain-bike shopping for me and truck shopping for Brian. After a winter off of fishing, I wanted to catch
a fish so badly that the 45-degree Saturday afternoon actually found me standing in the rain, hip deep in freezing water.
I caught nothing. |

Saturday night we decided that we would brave the rain and try to burn down the 4-foot high stump of a cedar that we had
cut down last year at this time. It didn't go down easily. We fueled the fire with wheelbarrows full of wood, and us
with bottles of Smirnoff Ice. We finally gave up at after 6 hours of burning and hit the sack.
Sunday morning when we got up, we were surprised to find the stump still there.
We'll have to continue the effort on another trip.

While loading up wood from the woodpile, we found a couple kittens. |

Since we didn't get any golf in on Saturday, we played a round at Sunny Brae on Sunday before heading home. It still wasn't
a very nice day, but at least we didn't get wet. There were never more than 4 other people on the entire course due to
the cold temperatures. |

I stopped off in
Cedar Rapids to wish my mom a happy Mother's Day and got back to Chicago at about midnight. I don't think my mom is
6'3". She may be standing on something in that picture :-).
