Matt and Julie's 1999 Superior Hiking Trail Trip

This is just a brief photo album of our trip in late October of 1999. For those of you familiar with the trail, we started at the County Road 4 trailhead at Beaver Bay and hiked south for 2 rather difficult days, ending our walk at Gooseberry Falls. For those of you not familiar with the trail, you can learn about it at the Superior Hiking Trail website. At Gooseberry, we met our friends Ryan and Jennifer (those will be the two people you may not recognize below), and camped at the campground there with them. As you'll see from the pictures, it got cold - especially by the lake. On the trail, it was quite warm during the first day and we were able to hike with shorts and a fleece top for most of the time. We got snowed on a bit on day two as it started to feel more like the season. We didn't time our day 1 hike very well and ended up setting up camp in the woods, 100 yards off the trail, on what amounted to a bed of old sticks, leaves, and logs. The Superior Hiking Trail comes highly recommended from us. You don't have to hike for days on end, many people just come to hike for a few hours at a time. Enjoy!
