| The fishing was better this year than the previous two trips [see
vermilion '99 and vermilion '00],
but still not great. We're thinking of moving the annual fishing adventure elsewhere next year to a
different lake and time of year in hopes of better luck.
Julie and I drove with Doug to Minneapolis Wednesday night, dropping off Julie at her sister's house and
continuing on to Doug's place in Blaine. We met up with Brian at 6AM on Thursday and then left the Cities
for Vermilion. We were on the lake heading toward our campsite across the lake at around noon.

Brett was there again doing all of the cooking, making sure that during the span the 4 day trip we each consumed
several pounds of bacon, a dozen eggs, and countless pounds of steak, pork tenderloin, and chicken.

The weather was fair. We had afternoon showers a couple days, but for the most part it was sunny and warm.
Nights were cool and made for good sleeping in our tents.

There were no "giant" fish caught on this trip, but we did have a few good sized fish. We (Doug and I) ended up
taking 32 bluegills and 2 pike fillets back to Chicago and Brian caught a 20-inch walleye.

Matt (Brother-in-law) and his brother, Ben joined
us Saturday and Sunday. Their 150 hp-powered boat allowed us to get to the far reaches of the lake.
Matt caught a big smallmouth bass on one of these trips to previously "uncharted (by us) waters".

On Sunday, I caught a nice-sized (approximately 5 lbs) northern pike on a surface buzz-bait and followed it up by
catching a few smallmouth bass. We left Vermilion at about 4PM for the Cities, and after a night at Doug's
place we picked up Julie and got back to Chicago around 8PM Monday.
