Going to Prudhoe

Alaska: Prudhoe Bay (Deadhorse)

Prudhoe Bay is the home to the largest oil field in North America, supplying 20% of America's oil.
Getting There: There is only one road to Prudhoe Bay, and it has only recently been opened for public use nearly all the way to the Arctic Ocean. It is the Dalton Highway, a 414 mile-long gravel road which parallels the Trans-Alaska Pipeline. The road is primarily used by truckers bringing supplies to the oil fields.
Here are a couple good Dalton Highway informative links:
Overnight Stay: There are only two hotels in Prudhoe Bay. Both offer tours to the oil field and Arctic Ocean. You can't go to either unattended since the land is owned by the oil companies.
Going Back:We'll take our time getting back. There are several places to stop along the way and camp. If we get brave, we may venture into Gates of the Arctic National Park for a day or two. The maps below are an excellent resource on what kind of services are offered along the route. Click on one for the full-sized image.
