Matt's Results/Press

This page was created as an answer to requests to publish my high jump material in a more accessible forum.  Here you will not only find my writings, but links to some of what I consider the best published research on the sport.  I've also included links to videos that are good examples of topics that I stress in my teaching.  Access all of this information through the navigation bar on the left.  If you have questions or feedback, please feel free to email me.

Matt has been involved in high jumping every year since he began competing himself in 1990 as a high school senior.  That year, his usual spring sport of tennis was not an option due to a healing basketball injury that made it impossible for him to hold on to a tennis racket.  Having run cross country in the fall of his senior year, he initially considered running 800s for the track team, but before he could make it to the track to start a career in middle-distance running, he was diverted to a high jump pit by his good friend and classmate Tim Suchan (7th place '96 Olympic Trials) and high jump coach Al Stiers.  That first day in practice, off the gym floor, Matt jumped 6 feet in his basketball shoes and realized that this event might be a better fit for his 6'6" frame.  After jumping over 6'7" in his 3rd high school meet he first thought of the high jump as being a sport he could participate in in college.  See Matt's Bio for the rest of the story.

Today, Matt is an assistant track coach at Rock Canyon High School in Colorado, where he has the privilege of coaching the boys and girls high jumpers.
